Legal Voice has long fought to end sex discrimination in housing in the Northwest. We’ve represented women who were sexually assaulted or harassed by their landlords. We’ve drafted and helped pass laws to ban housing discrimination against domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking survivors. And we’ve strongly supported efforts to ensure that housing discrimination against transgender and gender nonconforming people is recognized as a form of sex discrimination prohibited by the federal Fair Housing Act.
And now, we’re thrilled to report that Legal Voice will be working on a national level to help end sex discrimination in housing, in partnership with amazing allies in the Northwest! The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded a grant to the Northwest Fair Housing Alliance (NWFHA) to develop a national education campaign focused on sex discrimination in housing.
We are honored to have been selected as one of NWFHA’s partner organizations for this project, along with our allies at YWCA of Spokane and Gender Justice League!
Together, we will develop public service announcements and educational materials (in multiple languages) to inform the public, housing providers, and advocates about sex discrimination in housing. In particular, this campaign will focus on discrimination based on domestic violence, sexual harassment, gender stereotyping, and gender identity.
Only one of these grants was awarded by HUD, so we are honored to be part of this important national project. We look forward to sharing updates with you over the next 18 months as we move forward with this campaign.
