SCOTUS Brings Marriage Equality Nationwide with Monumental Decision

It has finally happened! Today, the United States Supreme Court brought marriage equality to all 50 states with a 5-4 vote. This is a remarkable victory for the LGBT community nationwide. Today's decision affirms what we've known all along: it is unconstitutional to deny the freedom to marry to same-sex couples.

Together, we've worked toward this moment for a long time—going back to 2004, when we filed a lawsuit challenging Washington's ban on marriage for same-sex couples. We were overjoyed when marriage equality became a reality in Washington with the approval of Referendum 74 in 2012.

But the work for marriage equality could not end until it became a reality throughout the country. That is why, as part of The Alliance: State Advocates for Women's Rights and Gender Equality, we filed a "friend of the court" brief  in Obergefell v. Hodges, the case that, today, made history for LGBT couples and their families.
