Self Help Committee
The Self Help Committee at Legal Voice is a diverse group of attorneys, paralegals, law students, and other community members who assist people representing themselves in legal matters. We meet at the Legal Voice offices in downtown Seattle on the second Wednesday of every month for approximately an hour, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Qualifications
Anyone interested in becoming involved in the Self Help Committee may join.
Responsibilities
As a committee member you will:
- attend monthly meetings
- inform the committee of other activities or programs that may be of interest to Legal Voice
- bring ideas for projects to the committee
- clearly identify any conflicts with Legal Voice positions or policies
- participate in the work of the committee in or more of the following ways:
- write self help materials and legal information memos
- provide support to the Information and Referral Line
- identify legal needs and appropriate responses (through surveys and community outreach)
Current projects include:
- preparing new self help materials and updating existing materials
- increasing access to our materials through outreach, translation, and distribution
- commenting on proposed court rules and legislation (coordinated with legislative advocacy staff)
- working with our Senior Outreach Workgroup to prepare a Senior Handbook and seek funding to distribute the handbook statewide (we also hope to provide some trainings for seniors and providers on legal issues and resources in Washington State)
Time Commitment
Committee members serve for three-year terms, renewable for another three years.
