Information and Referral Phone Line
Every year, thousands of women and men call Legal Voice with questions about important legal matters affecting their lives. Individuals like you, trained to respond to these calls through our Information & Referral Phone Line (I&R), provide our callers with valuable legal information and referrals from our extensive database.
Qualifications
This position is open to attorneys, law students and paralegals, or those who have completed or are currently enrolled in a legal training program, or have legal work experience. Both women and men are encouraged to volunteer.
Responsibilities
I&R Volunteers provide callers with:
- information about Washington law, particularly in the areas of family, employment, debt, and landlord/tenant law
- referrals to community agencies and private attorneys
- assistance with problem-solving
- self-help materials
Training and Benefits
Legal Voice will prepare you to become an I&R volunteer through an orientation and on-the-job training on our phone line. Trainings for new volunteers are held approximately every two weeks, year-round.

- access to an extensive array of written materials on a range of key legal topics to help you develop a substantive knowledge of Washington law
- hands-on practice in client interviewing and client contact skills
- use of your skills in a unique and rewarding way—directly helping others!
Time Commitment
I&R volunteers must commit to at least one 3½-hour shift per week for a minimum of three months.
Available shifts include:
- Monday - Thursday —9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 1:00 to 4:30 p.m.
- Tuesdays and Wednesdays—5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
