Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights
Marriage Equality
Civil marriage is a fundamental right. Yet lesbian and gay couples continue to be denied this basic right in virtually every state.
Legal Voice is a leader in the fight to achieve marriage equality for lesbian and gay couples. We served as co-counsel in Andersen v. King County, a case we brought in 2004 to challenge Washington's ban on same-sex marriage. Although a narrow plurality of the Washington Supreme Court held in 2006 that the state constitution does not guarantee marriage equality for same-sex couples, we have not given up this fight. Instead, we have worked in the Washington State Legislature to help pass domestic partnerships laws that provide same-sex couples with the same rights and responsibilities available to different-sex married couples under state law. And when anti-gay extremists filed Referendum 71 to require a public vote on whether to approve the expansion of Washington’s domestic partnership law, we joined with our allies to fight successfully to win voter approval of the law in November 2009.
We will continue to fight in the courts and in the legislature for full equality in marriage and in all aspects of family life until we—and all families—have achieved victory.
