Family Law

Family Law

Women in the United States have gained much in the last one hundred years. We no longer automatically lose custody of our children and property upon divorce. Yet we still provide the majority of care to our children and other family members, as well as shoulder more than our share of housework. And when women go it alone, their economic status often suffers. Legal Voice has worked hard for more than 30 years to ensure that family law treats women fairly and recognizes our important role in the family.

Current Action

  • Developing policies to prevent abusive litigation in family law cases.
  • Continuing our work to ensure that adults who have functioned in every respect as a parent can be legally recognized and have the right to retain their relationship with their child, even if they are not biological or adoptive parents.
  • Challenging court policies and practices that wrongly deny fee waivers to indigent parties, limiting their access to the courts to resolve family law issues.
  • Advocating for the rights of incarcerated mothers and their families.
